Countach Wins Place on Historic Vehicle Register with ‘Cannonball Run’

This Lamborghini is stunning.

It is difficult to properly collect, document, archive, and preserve history for future generations, especially when it comes to a car. The National Historic Vehicle Register documents and archives the most significant vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles in the country. Today, the organization inducted the 30th vehicle – the 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP400S that was used in the Cannonball Run.

The Countach is a symbol in its own right. It was a remarkable performance car that debuted in the mid-1970s and that influenced the supercar era. The one that is inducted is more remarkable. It was featured in The Cannonball Run‘s first scene. This movie was based on the famous coast to-to-coast races organised by Brock Yates, an auto journalist. It was a comedy that starred a cast of stars and featured cars. This movie certainly contributed to the car’s popularity in the 1980s.

The mid-engine LP400S chassis number 1121112 is finished in Nero black and paired with a Senape interior. The Lamborghini’s 4.0-liter V12 produced just 353 horsepower (263kW). However, this was quite a lot in the 1970s when automakers were focusing more on fuel economy. For the movie, the car received a front wing, and two spotlights.

In collaboration with the US Dept. of Interior, the NHVR was established in 2013. to the Library of Congress for documentation. To properly preserve and document the vehicle, the organization collaborates with Historic American Engineering Record. The Countach and other NHVR cars will be on display at the Cars at the Capital, even the National Mall. The 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP400S a Lamborghini nameplate is being resurrected. It joins cars such as the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and DeLoren MMC-12 among many others.
