It will be unveiled to the public at Chicago’s 2022 Auto Show.
Ford defeating Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966 is one of the most enduring automotive stories ever. But Ford can’t claim that the 1-2-3 win was achieved overnight. Before the GT40 winning Mk II combination was released, there were many revisions. The AM GT-1, a unique red/gold GT40 Mk I by Alan Mann Racing, was one of them. It is the base for the latest Ford GT special-edition trim.
Officially, this car is the 2022 Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition. It will be open for everyone to see when the Chicago Auto Show opens in 2022. The exterior is strikingly red with gold and white graphics. It also has roundels bearing the number 16, which was used in the original 1966 race. The GT40 did not have carbon fiber. However, you will find it on the Alan Mann Heritage Edition with its wheels, side sills and rear diffuser.
Inside, there’s more gold and red trim, including accent stitching and in different spots throughout the cabin. The red exterior is perfectly matched by the paddle shifters. The dark mixture of leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber is enhanced by gold inlays on their dash. Ghosted on the door panels is the number 16. You’ll also find more gold on an X brace that connects to the seats.
Mike Severson is Ford GT program manager. “Whether it’s racing like a madman at the track or out-innovating competition, the Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition honours the cars that led Ford to its wins.” This Ford GT, with its red-and-gold livery, is inspired by Alan Mann Racing’s contribution to our Le Mans winning story.
AM GT-1 was the prototype that used the smaller 289-inch V8. It was also the first GT40 to have an aluminum body. Two were produced, but Ford will make more than two Alan Mann Heritage Edition models of the current generation GT. It is not clear how many were built, but Ford GT production will end in its last year. This will be a rare car.
The Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition and the 1966 AM GT-1 prototype will share space at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show. It will be open February 12th.
