Acura Type S Concept Teased, Signs Return To Sporty Sub-Brand

The concept will be unveiled during Monterey Car Week.

Acura has relaunched its Type S sub-brand by introducing the Type S Concept. The Type S Concept will debut at Monterey Car Week on August 15. It is a sleek four-door sedan. We think so, considering that the Japanese luxury brand is only showing the model with a single still photo and a nine-second video.

The video gives us enough information to know what we can expect from the concept. It shows a sedan-like silhouette and cab-rear styling with relatively short overhangs. We’d bet the Type S Concept previews next-generation TLX. The teaser video and accompanying photo show that the front profile, taillights and front fascia match those of the early TLX designs, an AcuraZine user found embedded in the current RDX crossover software suite.

It’s not surprising that the Type S Concept previews the new TLX. Acura’s parent company, Honda filed for trademark to TLX Type S in October 2016. If the Type S models from years past are any indication, the upcoming TLX Type S will have a stronger engine, stiffer suspension tuning and better braking capabilities than the current model.

The Type S Concept’s rear-drive proportions are not apparent in the production model. However, it is expected that the base of the Type S will be front-drive. The Type S will likely include Acura’s torque-vectoring super-handling all-wheel-drive (SH-AWD). It is not clear if the car uses a prop shaft to send its power backwards or if it uses an electric motor mounted at the rear.

We are excited to see Acura’s Type S return to their model line. And we cannot wait to see the Type S Concept in metal at Monterey Car Week.
